The Portuguese explorer Bartholomeu Dias headed an expedition to sail around the southern tip of Africa in the hope of finding a trade route to India. Dias and his fleet eventually entered what he named Aguada de São Brás (Bay of Saint Blaise) - later renamed Mossel Bay after the abundance of mussels in the bay - on 3 February 1488. His landing will again be celebrated this year with the 2017 Dias Festival from 2 February 2017 to 5 February 2017.
In the spirit of “Where Cultures Meet” there will be something for everybody to enjoy at the 2017 Dias Festival – 529 years down the road of the landing of Dias’s fleet at Mossel Bay on 3 February 1488. As has been a feature of this festival – entry will be FREE! This will enable all to enjoy some of South Africa’s most popular artists and international shows free of charge.
The fun-filled programme will include
· a cultural concert in the Mossel Bay Town Hall, including international folk dancing
· performing arts troupes from China
The message is simple .... the Dias Festival at Mossel Bay is the place to be from 3 February to 5 February 2017.
